The Bangladesh City Inclusive Sanitation Project (BCISP) aims to improve access to urban sanitation services in 25 towns, addressing critical challenges related to inadequate infrastructure for waste and fecal sludge management, particularly in slums and informal settlements. These areas suffer from environmental contamination and frequent outbreaks of water-borne diseases like cholera and diarrhea due to poor sanitation systems. The Government of Bangladesh has prioritized urban sanitation by adopting an Institutional and Regulatory Framework (IRF) for Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) and receiving financing from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to implement modern, sustainable sanitation technologies. The project focuses on building infrastructure that spans the entire sanitation service chain—containment, emptying, conveyance, treatment, and disposal—while strengthening institutional capacity at the municipal level. A Project Preparation Special Fund (PPSF) grant of USD 3.3 million supports feasibility studies, engineering designs, and capacity building for local authorities, ensuring readiness for implementation. The project will improve public health, reduce environmental contamination, and enhance living conditions for vulnerable populations, particularly in informal urban areas.
